I was super excited when my colleague Suba asked me to shoot her family prayers last weekend, Mostly because I had no idea what it would entail. Turns out it was better than I could have ever expected! Way too many people in one apartment, and then add drums, smoke and fire! It was such an privilege to be there, and I think I fell in love with her family – so many warm, welcoming aunties, uncles and cousins. The shoot was hard work, with no space to move or breath, and fighting against really poor light of no less than 6 different colours, but I just love the way the D700 deals with low light, and gives photos that film-grain look that I haven’t seen with any other camera.
Jogja was the first stop on our epic Indon getaway, and definitely my fave city in Indonesia, so far. My favorite thing about Indonesia is no two places are alike. At all. Other than the consistently amazing food, of course. Jogja is everything Jakarta’s not, and definitely a place I would love to live in. Even with over 3 million people, it has a great small town charm, and is full of awesome things like batik and gudeg. I thought Borobudur and Prambanan temples were a little underwhelming, and excessively overpriced for foreigners, but the city itself was fantastic, I’m so tempted to go stay there for a while to learn Bahasa…. if only I can find 6 months to spare….
This one’s from the archives. I’ve wanted to have a reason to compile it as the full set that it’s meant to be, since I shot it way back in December. As I get my blog up and running, I plan on pulling more sets out of the archives, because I hate the thought of all those great images just sitting around on my hard drives, waiting for their opportunity to crash!
Julia and Tony were a super sweet couple, and lots of fun to shoot. The wedding was really small and intimate in the Swissotel Merchant Court and the Groom’s parent’s place. Since it was mostly downtown, we decided on a very urban – but romantic – setting for their formals, with the great CBD skylines from the esplanade as a background.
Carlina I am so happy you have started this! It’s absolutely beautiful! Congratulations and can’t wait to see more!

One of the segments of my last trip to Indonesia was a couple days at Gili Trawangan, off Lombok, with Rocky, Erik, Alita, Jo and I – or in the words of Rocky – “cultural vomit.” He has quite the way with words. The island was fantastic, even though it was pretty much a standard Southeast Asian backpacker stop, with the inevitable banana pancakes. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with banana pancakes, but… you know. Actually, it was marginally classier than most stops on the banana pancake tour of Asia, because the costs priced out most of the really dirty backpackers.
Beaches were fantastic, lots of good food, an abundance of friendly local kittehs – and no dogs – and the fine company of my cultural vomit compatriots. Perfect island getaway destination.

Hey Carli, it may be still works in progress, but it sure looks like it’s already worth a million bucks. You have the brains, the talent, plus most importantly the unique attitude!

Omg!!! I especially love this set. You have the ability to capture ordinary things in an extraordinary way. The photos of the kids eating off the leaves are my favorite mainly because they’re my favorite part of going to prayers too ^_^

Carlina - Thanks Mandisa~ I primarily used my 24-70mm, because it I can count on it to focus quickly and accurately, even in horrible lighting situations. I used the 105mm 2.8 VR macro for a lot of the outdoor portraits though, and a few shots with a couple other lenses as well.
