Penfolds Wine Re-corking Clinic

When I was asked to shoot a “wine re-corking” clinic, I had no idea just how fascinating it would be. If I had any expectations of the event at all, I thought it might just be matter of taking bottles of wine and opening them up and replacing the corks in some sort of production line type of work. It wasn’t.

Penfolds brings in their top wine makers to asses the health of bottles of wines at least 15 years old, and whether they need to be opened. If the decision to open them is made, there’s a bit of risk that the bottle could be spoiled. The wine is tested by the wine makers themselves and either given an official certification so they can be kept longer or sold at auction, or… well… worse news. The owner also gets the chance to taste the wine before they actually drink it. Then they’re re-corked and packaged up as good as new, with a certification sticker pasted on the back.

There were some very rare and expensive bottles that came in, and a few moments of suspense waiting for the final verdict on the wine and a few “un-certified” bottles that were drank on the spot. All that, combined with the amazing light in the St Regis hotel’s ball room, made this an awesome day for shooting.

I’m in love with shop houses. I want one. Actually, I want two, next to each other, so I can merge them together so they’re not super narrow like shop house tend to be. I think China House in Penang is actually four houses, and restored and decorated perfectly. It’s a big maze of art and dining spaces and even has a beautiful courtyard in the middle. This place inspires creativity <3

So now that I’m pretty much all caught up processing my archives of long lost photos, I wanted to do a couple of short posts on cool places. I’ve been mean to post this set for… oh… about a year, since I took them.

I love Nk’Mip wine. Probably my favorite of all BC wines (and BC wines are pretty much my favorite of all wines… call me biased… whatever…) I digress. Anyways, I was lucky enough to spend a night at their winery resort last year. It was at the end of winter so not much was a alive, and we were only there for the night and didn’t even stay long enough to tour the winery – sad face – but it was a beautiful place. Loved the desert inspired architecture and interior design; it fit right into the landscape. Maybe one of these days I’ll be in the Okanagan at a more winery tour friendly time of year.

Svenna’s Baptism

Apparently there’s a Danish church just behind my house. I had no idea. I had the pleasure of shooting Svenna’s baptism there last week. I don’t think most of the people there were Danish, but the service was mostly in Danish. I still haven’t quite figured it all out.

Finally at the end of my Java photos. This was my second time in Jogja and I still love it. Maybe even more than my first time. Really looking forward to being able to spend a few months there at some point to study more Bahasa. It’ll happen.

I’ve finally decided which of these shadow puppets I want: Baruna, God of the Sea. If anyone would like to find me a nice and authentic one and send it to me, I would be forever grateful.

Shirlene & Eugene | Icecream shop engagement shoot

Eugene and Shirlene are dedicated Ben & Jerry’s fans. As I’m told, Eugene basically seduced Shirlene with copious amounts of ice cream – like, 10 pints at a time. Naturally, they needed to do a pre-wedding shoot at Ben & Jerry’s. The shop on Dempsey Hill was absolutely perfect. Lovely heritage building and a VW van that matched their choice of ice cream. If anyone from the shop asks, NO, we did not touch the van. You can’t prove anything.

Borobudur | Central Java

This was my second time at Borobudur and for the second time we were too cheap to pay the 35USD or whatever the price is for the actual sunrise entry. I’m not going to say we didn’t make a dedicated effort to find someone to pay off to open the main entrance ahead of time to let us in to catch the sunrise. As much as I hate admitting failure, I think the lack of actual sunrise shots may suggest the outcome of that effort :(

We still managed to make it in early enough to have the temple pretty much to ourselves so we didn’t have a million people in our photos. Nice.

I’m off for some island time next week, but I’ll try to get another post up before I leave.

Clubvivre @ Alice in Asylum

Last night Clubvivre joined forces with The Experience Architect, FLABSLAB and several other partners to throw an amazing party. Clubvivre brought in one of their top chefs to provide dinner to start out the evening in a really cool shop house in Geylang full of art displays, weird and wonderful stations including gin and tonic cupcakes, super hipster moustache barbers, chicken that had been cooked in a bathtub for 6 hours, several drink stations that kept delicious Gin and Whisky cocktails flowing all night, and a mime, for good measure.

Today’s hangover was very generously sponsored by Hendrick’s Gin.
